Paid to hate

The year is 1970, and on the Dick Cavett Show are two young, recently returned Vietnam veterans - John Kerry, the charismatic, well-spoken patrician, and John O'Neill, the Republican attack dog, Kerry's very first character assassin.

I've seen this interview on C-SPAN, from which the picture above is taken (I couldn't find one of both Kerry and O'Neill), and it consisted of Kerry denouncing the activities and motives surrounding the Vietnam war, and O'Neill attacking Kerry's patriotism. Apparently things haven't changed much in the past 34 years...

There is a new television ad in swing states by "Swift Boat Veterans For Truth", a group of men who neither met, nor served with John Kerry, but happened to be in the same general vicinity of him during the time Kerry served in Vietnam. Nevermind the fact that the men whose lives Kerry literally saved during the war speak nothing but good of John Kerry... these swift boat veterans hate him. Why? They're told to. Told to by a very influential Republican by the name of John O'Neill.

Maybe he's still sore over the reception he got from the crowd that night on the Dick Cavett Show (he was booed while Kerry was cheered), or the fact that his biggest political mentor and benefactor, Richard Nixon, was impeached. No matter what the case, O'Neill is now head of this swift boat veteran coalition, and stopping at nothing to attack Kerry's character. How about a couple soundbytes?
I think the ad is dishonest and dishonorable. As it is, none of these individuals served on the boat (Kerry) commanded. Many of his crew have testified to his courage under fire. I think John Kerry served honorably in Vietnam ... I can't believe the president would pull such a cheap stunt
-John McCain, (R) Arizona

His account of what happened, and what actually happened, are the difference between night and day
-Jack Chenoweth, Lieutenant J.G., in the ad against Kerry

John Kerry saved my life
-Jim Rassman, Army Green Beret, who Kerry jumped into the water in the line of fire to pull back aboard the swift boat

It appears as if even now, after 30+ years, John O'Neill is still on the Republican payroll, carrying out their dirty work.

Breaking News: "The British are Coming!"

Tom Ridge recently raised the terror alert level to "high" in certain areas.

Via Yahoo
The Bush administration denied any suggestion that raising the terror alert in New York and Washington so quickly after the Democratic convention was politically motivated. "We don't do politics in the Department of Homeland Security," Ridge said.

Then I guess the "yes man" Ridge never said this:
But we must understand that the kind of information available to us today is the result of the president's leadership in the war against terror, the reports that have led to this alert are the result of offensive intelligence and military operations overseas, as well as strong partnerships with our allies around the world, such as Pakistan.

Yes, such strong leadership. Dean was right on the money. Anytime the Republicans sense any kind of dissent or Democratic unity, it's quickly stifled with the looming terrorist threat. I'm not sure which is sadder: the fact that this adminstration would use such blatant fearmongering for personal gain or the fact that a few undecided voters are actually listening.

Here's how Ridge really views the terror color coded alert (terrible Photoshop job done by myself):

From the New York Times:
The Times reports today that much of the information that led to the heightened alert is actually three or four years old and that authorities had found no concrete evidence that a terror plot was actually under way. This news does nothing to bolster the confidence Americans need that the administration is not using intelligence for political gain.

There you have it folks. Nothing to fear but fear itself... or a fearmongering, lying, sorry excuse for leadership in the White House. This imminent threat we're warned of is actually from intel from three years ago. By that standard, I'd just like to warn all my friends and family that read the blog about the rising Nazi party in Germany. I hear that Hitler guy's a mean mofo.

Cold Turkey

Many years ago, I was so innocent I still considered it possible that we could become the humane and reasonable America so many members of my generation used to dream of. We dreamed of such an America during the Great Depression, when there were no jobs. And then we fought and often died for that dream during the Second World War, when there was no peace.

But I know now that there is not a chance in hell of America’s becoming humane and reasonable. Because power corrupts us, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Human beings are chimpanzees who get crazy drunk on power. By saying that our leaders are power-drunk chimpanzees, am I in danger of wrecking the morale of our soldiers fighting and dying in the Middle East? Their morale, like so many bodies, is already shot to pieces. They are being treated, as I never was, like toys a rich kid got for Christmas.

A Striking Resemblance
